Little Detroit

Little Detroit

Happy anniversary to Paul and me. Thirty four years is a long time to be with the same guy and we have had our ups and downs but I wouldn’t change it for the world. He has given me a great lifestyle, two wonderful children, indulged my idiosyncrasies and I still love him.

Where we went/are now

Where we went/are now

Today on our cruise, we left Hotham Island and ventured further west. Well, a little further west. We squeezed ourselves through Little Detroit, bumped our way along the bottom to Spanish, tried to anchor behind Green Island but the anchor wouldn’t hold so we found a very secluded anchorage on the north east side of Thomas Island, on the north side of Whaleback Channel. It’s secluded in that there are no other boats or cottages around but we are actually anchored between two islands so we can see boats passing along the channel.

The water is different in this part of the North Channel; it’s not quite as wet. Silly. It’s brown rather than the translucent blue in which we have been cruising. It’s very peaty and there is algae floating in it. So I assume somewhere further up, there is run-off from farmland making the water nutrient-rich. Also the water is about 6degrees warmer. Good for swimming; good for the algae.

Had a bit of excitement as we went up towards Spanish – had to pass through a very narrow cut/channel, Little Detroit. And then do some serious zigzagging to get to the approach channel for the marina. The depth is a little uncertain and uneven; fortunately the bottom was soft mud because we dragged a few times. However once in the marina there was sufficient water and the guys couldn’t be more helpful. Cycled to the grocery store and they opened 10 mins early because we were waiting. All in all, definitely worth a visit.

And now we are hiding again. Have a couple more days to hide before having to turn back. Safe travels to David and Bekah as they fly home from their vacation. Good, safe training to Anna as she continues to prepare for The CrossFit Games in two weeks. Love my family. Joanna
